Spirit of the Mask

115½" x 80"

A fascination with early indigenous art led me to research African and North American ceremonial masks and then on to masks from around the globe: Hindu deity, New Zealand Maori, Africa, China. This triptych began with the "Mask Mandala" revealing the significant physical connection between mask art and the animal kingdom.  From there I branched out to depict the "Power of the Mask" with the shaman, his buffalo headdress and painted face and the "Pleasure of the Mask" with the young Polynesian girl and her playful monkey.
