- The title of this quilt was first established in
Swahili, the principal native language of Kenya., "Inchi ya Paki
Mbali" ("A Far-Off Land of Cats"). My daughter Polly has always wished to explore the
tropical regions of Africa because her older brothers once were
"lucky enough" to live in Kenya as young children. During
college she participated in a study trip to Egypt and I prepared this
quilt for her as a memory of that bright land of desert and also to hint at the
shadowy land of deeper Africa. Polly is a cat lover, hence the theme
of the quilt and the preponderance of African cats hidden in the lower jungle
- a
land of camouflage.
