Spinning a Moonlight Tale

48" x 39"
Here I was challenged to piece a quilt inspired by the following quotation from the book Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin:
"Then, from atop a long rise, they saw the village sparkling like a group of colored candles. It was on the edge of the lake, which was crowned by the blue and green aura now hanging in the sky in astounding silent ribbons.  Smoke from chimneys crept up in intertwining white garlands and tangled on the moon."
I chose to design my quilt around the pinwheel motif, experimenting with more than one size pinwheel, and to spin them in opposite directions in order to create exaggerated and interrupted patterns.  A shower of light is suggested by pinwheels spinning in and out of the scene while along the edge of the quilt the motif angles into oblique pinwheels forming a “viewer’s perch” at the foreground of this winter tableau.
