Cloisonné Sea

66" x 73"

Cloisonné Sea is the result of taking a QBL quilting class with Velda Newman.   There I was instructed in the technique of resist dyeing of fabric to prepare it for scenes of nature.  My subject, the daddy seahorse, was inspired by a children’s book which describes life as a baby seahorse.  My subsequent viewing of Jacques Cousteau videos aided me in planning a reef  and kelp environment for the seahorse and his babies.  I snapped a photo of the quilt during its formation and the developed print reminded me of cloisonné jewelry’s glowing colors, hence the name of this quilt.
