Bird in Hand

20" x 30"

This quilt was designed for "The Proverbial Challenge," a collection of small quilts depicting proverbs, wives' tales, and things your grandmother would say! This challenge was inspired by a prior challenge, the "Full Deck," a collection of art quilts depicting the 52 playing cards plus 2 jokers. I chose the saying “A Bird in Hand” because my family refers to it frequently to remind one another to take what we’ve got, be grateful, and build with it. When I considered that saying for the subject of this quilt, a vivid picture came to mind of my 4 year old grandson Matt kneeling near his family’s henhouse, holding one of his beloved chicks. He was an obliging model which helped me create the focus for the quilt and, after doing a little research, I found the block “Hen and Chickens” which I included in the perspective surrounding Matt.
